The spate of kidnapping at the Niger Delta region continued its debut in the sporting arena when Norum Yobo, brother of Super Eagles and Everton FC defender Joseph Yobo was taken by armed men.

The older brother of the Nigerian international was taken from a hotel in the Garden City of Port-Harcourt in the early hours of Saturday though no ransom has been demanded and no group has claimed responsibility for the kidnap as yet.

Yobo's Everton football club meanwhile has come out in support of their player, adding that every assistance it can lend to the player and his family towards the safe return of his brother would be done.

In a statement on the club's website, the head of Public Relations and external affairs Ian Ross said messages have been sent to the defender offering assistance. He added that with the new development, J. Yobo would be allowed to remain away from the club for the foreseeable future.

Only a few weeks ago, chairman of Enyimba FC of Aba, Felix Anyansi-Agwu was taken hostage by gunmen who initially robbed him before taking him in after realising who he was. Then, a ransom was paid to return Anyansi-Agwu though neither him nor the club disclosed just how much was exchanged for the freedom of Agwu.
