An indefinite strike, embarked upon by all staff of Kwara State Polytechnic, has paralysed academic activities on the campus, forcing students to leave their hostels and travel home in to prepare for a really long holiday.
The strike, MyNaijaNews gathered, is to press home the staff union's demand for the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Tertiary Scale with effect from June, 2008. The strike commenced yesterday 12:00 noon after congress attended by all staff under ASU, SSANIP and SANU members at the ETF hall of the institution. The Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Kwara Poly chapter, Mallam Abubakar Jos Usman declared that the entire work force shall not resume until 100% CONTISS is paid as announced by the governor with effect from 1st June, 2008. "Any attempt whatsoever to rertrench staff or proposition of any ungodly law outside our conditions of service shall be seen as vindictive, prejudice and shall be met with stiff resistance", he added. Mallam Abubakar also stated that the proposed screening and original certificate verification is seen as an indictment on the past governing council as non-functioning and weak body that did not know what it was doing for four years. The Unions pleaded with the founding fathers of the polytechnic, the students and other stakeholders to make Governor Saraki have a rethink on the way he is handling kwara state polytechnic.
