Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Professor Chukwuma Soludo today in Abuja said N946.8b was spent for road constructions and rehabilitation as against the N968b widely speculated to have been spent during the Obasanjo administration.

The CBN Governor made this known while testifying at the hearing of the ad-hoc Senate Committee investigating the utilisation of funds in the transport sector.

According to Soludo though, the disparity in the figures have come as a result of some payments made through commercial banks especially in cases where money was needed to be disbursed for the purpose of some Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).

However, the already controversial issue became more controversial when the Accountant General of the Federation Mr. Ibrahim Dankwabo put the figure spent at N940.6b when he initially had said N968b was spent in his first appearance before the committee.

The AG blamed the disparity on poor record keeping between his office and the CBN, promising to conclude the reconciliation and present the exact amount spent to the Senate committee soon.

This disparity resulted in both institutions, alomg with the Ministry of Transport, the Budget Office and office of the Auditor General of the Federation being lambasted at the hearing by the committee's Chairman Senator Heineken Lopkobiri, who stated that the N6b difference in the figures must be accounted for by both parties for the knowledge of Nigerians.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke apologised for the statement released in response to the N30.9b withdrawal made in the last five days of December in 2007, adding it was meant to explain her position on the issue and not to embarrass the Senate.
