Allegations of frequent foreign travels amongst others levelled against Hon. Dimeji Bankole the Speaker of the House of Representatives have been debunked in a statement by the Speaker's Special Adviser on Communications Kayode Odunaro.

According to the statement, it was the intention of some "faceless people" to destablise the House and possibly remove the Speaker when he assumed office on June 24 following the infamous exit of Patricia Etteh.

However, this and other alleged plots failed to materialise especially as Bankole received standing ovation from over 90% of his colleagues after his welcome sppech to them. This, according to the statement is an indication of the House's confidence in the Speaker's leadrship.

On the issue of Mr. Bankole embarking on unnecessary trips abroad, the statement noted that the Speaker is entitled to embark on two foreign trips a month out of which he has made five official trips to Kenya, US, UK France and South Africa in the last seven months.

The trips according to the statement have mostly been on invitations and are aimed at promoting partnership with these countries governments and parliaments as well as aid in the capacity building of most new members with little legislative experience at the national level.

The statement also noted that it was in the dispensation of the Speaker that an unprecedented N450b of unspent funds from the 2007 budget was returned along with the discovery of 16 secret Accounts among other discoveries.

Despite all these plots and allegations, the Speaker remains undaunted in his quest to make the House of Representatives the "House of Nigerian People" as well as ensuring delivery on its key functions of representation, law making and oversight as the House embark on its 2008/09 legislative session.
