The Nigeria Bar Association has come out in support of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) that currently is in the fourth day of a nationwide strike action over the non-implementation of the Teachers Salary Structure by the Federal Government.
In a statement signed by the NBA's President Olisa Agbakoba (OON), the Association called on the FG to implement the structure in respect of federal teachers since by its understanding the cash requirement, which amounts to about N800m for the increment, has been appropriated in the year's budget.
While urging the NUT and FG to reopen dialogue on the issue which has crippled the education sector in the country, the NBA offered to play the mediators role to help reach an agreement.
Also, the NBA urged the striking teachers to hold separate talks with State Governments to achieve similar implementation of the structure for State teachers since the FG cannot impose on States.
The NBA added that the FG should show leadership by urgently implementing the agreement with the NUT so that State Governments can follow suit and consequently save the future of the children and the country.
