For those of you who are already lamenting the end of The Apprentice Africa…since it has made you addicted to your TV sets…do not worry too much as the premier business reality show in Nigeria, ‘The Intern’ commences its second season today, July 2.
The TV show debuted in 2007 {between January and March} with the support of Bank PHB. It succeeded in showing its audience the business aspect of reality TV and it was said to have helped increase the visibility, customer base and stock value of the bank. One other thing it seemed to have achieved was to wet the appetite of TV viewers for more of such shows. This might explain the recent success of The Apprentice Africa. Although Bank PHB have dumped The Intern for The Apprentice Africa, the success of the show last year could not but help get other sponsors…this time, it’s another bank…Spring Bank…they want to get their own share of what the show gave Bank PHB. ‘The Intern’, much similar in context to The Apprentice Africa, had 10 contestants battle for the prime spot in thirteen weeks of real strategies on television. However, unlike The Apprentice Africa, all ten were offered jobs with the then sponsoring bank. Whilst three of them declined to pursue their personal dreams, the other seven now work with Bank PHB in different capacities. The eventual winner of the maiden edition of ‘The Intern’, Afolabi Adetola got a 3 million naira cash prize, a Nissan Tilda car, and MBA scholarship and a wardrobe. He now runs his own Bancass Capital Management Limited. The show also facilitated the birth of a child…I mean after just about 15 months, there was a marriage and the marriage has already yielded fruit. Ayo Oguntubi and Rhona Ahaonu (now Oguntubi) met on the show and are now married with a daughter. Well… it is my pleasure to ask you to look forward to another three months of mind blowing business activities on Television…mmm, you can also look forward to another marriage, don’t count on that sha. The show will be aired on MBI, STV, AIT and NTA. Meanwhile, HiTV has also announced July 5 as the commencement date for its reality TV show tagged ‘Nigeria reality Show’ in which the winner will be tagged ‘The Nigerian’. 18 contestants would be pitched together in a house, called Nigeria for a maximum period of 8 weeks.
