Quite recently, I stumbled upon a piece of article in one of nigeria’s dailies. The writer made a nice job of classifying Nigerian musicians into two groups; the entertainers and the music makers. According to the writer, Asa is one of the music makers.
Asa Summarily, the entertainers are those whose songs are meant for the dance hall only while the music makers’ music sort of grows with its audience. Hence they last longer than the entertainers. An aside…this might explain why 9ice made his performance at Mandela’s party a hell of a job…don’t say I told you, please. Well, it also gives us a reason for the success of the recent Asa concert held in Lagos…I mean not many Nigerians would be willing to pay N15,000 to watch a Nigerian act perform…e be Eminem or 50 Cent? This however was not in Asa’s case, the two day concert witnessed such a large turn-out that I believe she would be surprised herself…it was long overdue. Named Bukola Elemide at birth, Asa recently made a blistering start to her career with her debut album titled ‘ASHA’. Jokes apart…it wasn’t really a bad start. Featuring hit tracks like ‘Jailer’, ‘Fire on The Mountain’ and ‘Eye Adaba’, the album got five nominations in the first edition of Soundcity Music Video Awards held earlier this year…she won the best new artiste award. She also stole the show at the hip hop world awards winning the recording of the year, album of the year and vocal performance awards. The album even earned the producer, Cobhams Asuquo an award. Asa was born of Nigerian parents in far away France…mmm…bon jour. She has been based in France ever since which explains why she hardly shows up in Nigeria. Well, back to the concerts, Asa gave her audience value for their money performing some of her tracks. The first show held at the Civic Centre while the second was staged at Eko Hotel and whatever. The crowd was held spell bound by her performance with most of them becoming enemies of their seats…they stood all through. The concert, facilitated by HiTV and some other corporate bodies, also witnessed a performance by GT the guitarman. I guess the concert would have shown Asa how much people wanted to meet her and encourage her to come home...more often.
