Dance Crew, ‘Premier League’ has emerged the winner of Dare 2 Drop National Hip Hop Dance competition. This qualifies them to represent Nigeria, for the first time, at the Hip Hop International Dance championship coming up next month in Las Vegas.
The Premier League Dance Crew ‘Premier League’ competed in the national finals with seven other crews chosen from across the country including: ‘Watch It’, ‘Revolutionary Soldiers Crew’ (RMC), ‘Most Fantastic Group’ (MFG), ‘Emonite’, ‘Streethood’, ‘Earthshakers’, and ‘X-Limit’. The finals, held last saturday at the studio 868 on the island, was as explosive as ever and also had Gbemisola of Cool Fm and crazy-as-ever ‘Denrele of Sound city on its panel of judges. The event in brief: it started a little later than the kick off time with apologies from the organizers and went straight off to the introduction of the competing crews. The crews competed in two rounds; the first round saw all eight crews dance to their chosen songs to the delight of the audience; Emonite started it all with a well-delivered dance choreography, which the judges found commendable. Earthshakers tried their best to shake the dance floor. Unfortunately for them, the judges thought they started well but their ending was…em…rather disastrous. Watch It took to the floor next and they danced…I mean, they really danced. They got the best applause of the first three dance crews and they raised the standards of the audience expectations from the dancers. Next up was X-Limit who came up with a very nice performance that ended just when the audience was warming up to them. The judges summed it up… good performance, too short. Talking about the standards set by the Watch It group. It became almost insignificant at the end of Streethood’s performance. In fact, it was a unanimous decision not only amongst the judges but also amongst the audience that they were…good. Then came the turn of the MFG. Though their dance had a few flashes of brilliance in it like the slow-motioned aspect, their performance was will make a perfect irony when placed side by side with their name. RSC also had their own fair chance to use the dance floor to their advantage…they gave a good account of themselves. Just when the audience and judges seemed to have seen the last of good dance came the Premier League and with the audience response, one could tell that theirs was the best of the first round. In fact, a deaf man would have heard the applause of the audience. What was so special about them? They creatively infused football, the passion of most Nigerians; into their dance…it was pretty cool. After compiling the first round results, the judges rightly decided that RSC, MFG and Emonite should join the audience to watch the second round. However, two crews were tied on points. At the end of the face-off between them, X-Limit was shaken out of the contest. The second round brought with it another set of stunning dance steps and breathtaking stunts…the audience could not help wondering how those dancers pull off some stunts. Earthshakers came up first this time with a performance that would turn out to be the worst of the round. The crowd was treated to a thrilling commando style of dance by Streethood and the crowd response was inspiring. Premier League came up next with another creative set off dance steps and moves spiced with a little drama whilst Watch It took their turn to round up the second and final round of the contest. At this point, I was full of pity for the judges, choosing a winner amongst the finalists wasn’t going to be easy. Whilst the judges were engrossed with their not too enviable task of deciding the winner, the audience was treated to live performances from some notable artistes in the country today. Kel was the first to take to the floor and she assured the audience that they will be all right with, ‘Waa Wa Alright’. ‘Suspect’ crew was also around to perform ‘Jawonsi’ to the delight of the audience. And the star performance of the night was by…guess who…em…Rooftop MCs. The crowd went into a frenzy with their performance of ‘E Lenu’ which was immediately followed up with ‘Ori mi wu o, e lagi mo’…what? Somebody just hit my head…I was just singing Rooftop MCs’ song. To the results, Earthshakers got 86 points to pick the fourth spot, Streethood came third with 155 points, Watch it garnered 158 points to hold on to second spot while Premier League stole the show with 168 points, Although the audience was not too pleased with the results, I think the judges could not have done better. You know… you can’t always please everybody at all times. Well, in a post event interview, Premier League consisting of 5 guys and a lady expressed their surprise at emerging the winners. They believed the other crews gave them stiff competition. They promised Nigerians that they would go to Las Vegas, See Las Vegas and conquer Las Vegas…mmm, for that…join me in wishing them luck. Before I forget, I’ve got a message from Rooftop MCs for you all that visit this site. The message is…E Lenu.
