The Confederation of African Football yesterday outlined the rules that would guide how qualification into the second phase of the 2010 World and Nations Cup would be determined.

According to CAF, the countries that top each of the 12 groups in the first phase of qualifying will automatically reach the second and final round of qualifying.

However, the best eight second placed countries to join them would need to do some mathematics before knowing their status as CAF has considered Group 11, which consists of three teams only unlike four that is obtained in all other groups.

Due to this, the second placed teams from Groups 1 to 10 and Group 12 will have their results against the bottom placed countries of their goups erased to ensure fairness on the part of the second placed country from Group 11.

The move would ensure all second placed countries are separated by same number of games played and points garnered in the course of the qualifying series.

Also, in the scenario of South Africa finishing top of a group in the second round of qualifying should the Bafana Bafana go that far, their results in that group would be erased for the purpose of deciding the country that would qualify for the World Cup being hosted by South Africa.

Angola also comes into the fray as the three teams in East African country's group in the second round of qualifying would automatically qualify for the Nations Cup which will hold in Angola in 2010 as well.

The African zone of the World Cup qualifiers, which also doubles as qualifiers for the Nations Cup, has reached its halfway mark in the first phase with Nigeria currently leading Group Four with maximum nine points from three games. The Super Eagles will next play Equatorial Guinea in Abuja this Saturday having defeated the Guineans 1-0 in Malabo last weekend.
