Porto Re-instated in 2008/09 UEFA Champions League

European football governing body UEFA yesterday re-instated Portuguese league champions FC Porto back into the Champions League of the upcoming season after the club won an appeal over their recent banishment.
The initial banishment from the 2008/09 Champions League competition came as a result of the club being found guilty of bribing referees in two league matches played in the 2003/04 season.

That case was investigated by the Portuguese football association who went on to fine the club $120,000 and deduct six points from their final points total in the 2007/08 league season.

That deduction however had minimal significance on the league table as Porto still won the league, 14 points clear of nearest rival Sporting Lisbon.

However, UEFA will continue to look into teh case and have stated that Porto could still be banned from participating Champions League competition of 2009/10.

Porto had won the league in the 2003/04 season and went on to win the Champions League later on that season, defeating AS Monaco of France 3-0 under the guidance of Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho.
