It is unprecedented for a governor of the oil-rich Niger Delta, especially Rivers State, not to always appear in their native regalia known to be commonplace with the ex-governors of the region, especially the ex-governor of Rivers State, Dr. Sir Peter Odili, and the ill-fated governor of the State, Sir Celestine Ngozichim Omehia.
Under Odili, the State was restless with activities but nothing was seen to show for the government. The administration of Odili was only known for its galore with noise, not made by sound systems or vehicles, but by jungles and advertisements and the sporadic noise that the cult groups made then and Odili treated them with the kid gloves. The praise for opaque was the fad in the Odili-led administration and it customized the use of native wears and round cap, which was of resemblance with the always drunken Cow Boys of Europe. While the European Cow Boys are known for their intoxication, Odili was without doubt intoxicated by power. He was known for his lavishness that earned him the name “father Christmas” in many quarters. And how many ch (th) ieftaincy tittles was he given by Nigerian Royal Highnesses? That is a story for another day. As a trained doctor who was supposed to be wearing coat, rather, Odili chosed to native wears that was meant to extol our culture, but in the Odili’s parlance, it epitomized corruption. We all knew how deep and big the pockets of our native clothes are, that was why Odili wore that kind of clothe often – to enable him pocket as many sum of money as possible or as impossible. Albeit, Odili was not the only governor who was known for the cultural attire, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo is an unrepentant wearer of it. From this exhibition, one would not attest what example they wear showing by the wearing of the native clothes other than corruption. Like the greedy Sir Lugard, the English Capitalist, Odili was also addressed as, sir: A Catholic tittle. But he competed with Lugard whose name should be remembered first for the immensely application of the divide and rule theory. Odili divided virtually all the communities in Rivers State when he was in power to help him achieve his (un) democratic ambitions. Rivers State under Odili was a den of katakata. And the recent unfolding events at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up by Governor Chibuike Amaechi about Odili should not take any one by surprise. This is the primary stage exposition of a man Nigerians addressed as SIR – a NIGHT in the holy Catholic Church – was. And defining SIR from the Odili angle would make one characterize all who go by that religious tittle as deceitful. After all, did Obasajo not call him ole? One confusing aspect of the trickery Odili and his chicanery government, which he subjected everyone to threat, which was the do-or-die democracy of the time, was the every day white colour clothes he was wearing. One would not know that he was wearing those white clothes to help people believe that he was a saint. But the crowd knows who is a hero. Anyway, Saul later became Paul. One should thank God for the governor in Amaechi He gave Rivers people. This is a governor who does not know what is called ‘godfather’. He is administrating the state as a democracy is supposed to be. One could remember that one of the bills he sent to the State House of assembly immediately he assumed office was DUE PROCESS. Amaechi who was wearing the kind of native attires Odili was known for, because of the aforementioned details, said that his administration has no link with any past administration in the state. Amaechi prefers going on the simple English attire that could expose any money that was overfixed in it. That shows that Amaechi meant transparency, equity, accountability. In his administration was when the Rivers people are to know how much allocation comes to the State’s coffer from the federation account. In a nutshell, Amaechi is not a manufacturer of problems. Instituting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has said it all. Odimegwu Onwumere, poet and author, is the Founder, Poet Against Child Abuse (PACA), Rivers State. 08032552855, 08082608444.
