The governing body of football in Europe, UEFA have disqualified Portuguese league champions FC Porto from next season’s Champions League after the club was found guilty of bribing referees in two matches.
The incident, which took place in the 2003/04 season the club won the Portuguese Super Liga and Champions League, was presided by the football federation in Portugal. Porto was also deducted five points for the bribing incident, a punishment that was not contested by the club. Disqualification from the Champions League is however going to be contested by the club. Should the ruling stand, Porto look set to lose some of their best legs including Ricardo Quaresma who has not hidden his intention of leaving the club in the near future. Meanwhile, top Romanian club Steaua Bucharest is also in danger of losing their place in the Champions League next season based on the same allegations of bribing referees. Should Steaua be found guilty, they will lose their place in Europe’s elite club competition. Meanwhile, in Porto’s incident, former coach Jose Mourinho, who was in charge at the period under review, has not been implicated in the incident.
