The speculations surrounding the vacant job at Chelsea skyrocketed after the sacking of Assistant Coach Henk Ten Cate and one of the favourites to replace Avram Grant at Stamford Bridge, Roberto Mancini.

Mancini was sacked from Italian league champions Inter Milan despite leading them to three consecutive league titles and two Coppa Italia triumphs in his three years at the San Siro.

His dismissal makes way for former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho to be appointed as the new boss of the Nerazzuris while Mancini will become a firm favourite for the vacant job at Stamford Bridge.

That Chelsea job has seen the likes of Blackburn Rovers’ coach Mark Hughes, Russia's national team boss Guus Hiddink and former Juventus coach Didier Deschamps all linked.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s assistant coach Ten Cate was sacked barely days after assurance of having a future at the club following the sack of Grant just after the Champions League final loss to Manchester United.

Ten Cate’s sack raises speculations that the backroom staff of theh prospective coach is being cleared up ahead of an appointment, which now seems sooner than later.

Ten Cate joined the West London club from AFC Ajax midway through the last league campaign and brought with him his controversial tactics of getting on players’ nerves to get the best out of them, most notably the club’s captain John Terry.
