More than 2,000 community events are currently planned for 2008. The Opening Ceremony of the Candlelight Memorial will be held in Lilongwe, Malawi at the Civil Service Stadium where speeches from Malawi's leaders and civil society organizations and the official candlelighting will kickoff global events. Malawi is one of the countries suffering most severely from the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Beginning in 1983 in San Francisco, California, local community organizations, including HIV/AIDS support groups, schools, churches, businesses and health-care organizations, have been holding events to educate people about HIV/AIDS and make people aware of the plight of those infected and affected by this global pandemic. For 25 years most of the Candlelight Memorial programs have been led by people living with HIV/AIDS - emphasizing the important role of civil society in promoting programs and improved policies for addressing the disease.
"The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial demonstrates that when people care about their neighbors and others in their community, they can bring about significant and life-saving change," said Dr. Nils Daulaire, president of the Global Health Council. "There has been remarkable progress in improving the prevention, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS that has been the result of civil society's leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS in partnership with governments, donors, researchers and drug development companies. The change starts when communties demand the health care they need and deserve."
The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is supported by the Ford Foundation, the Abbott Fund and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
