As part of its on-going prison reforms, the Nigerian Prisons Authorities has commissioned a 240-bed building for awaiting-trail inmates at the Medium Security Prison, Kuje, Abuja.
Minister of Interior, Maj.Gen. Godwin Abbe (rtd), at the Commissioning ceremony in Abuja, said the structure was aimed at decongesting the prison to conform to international standard. This is a move away from the colonial structures inherited from the British to modern structures reflecting the nation’s weather and concept of incarceration. "The gains of the building were short and long term approach to prison decongestion especially as it affected awaiting trial inmates. The new building, according to Abbe, was designed and constructed by the Works Department of NPS at N49 million. “The construction of the building is an arrangement within the prison system to ensure that no matter all the delay the trial process takes, the citizen who is unfortunate to be suspected is not subjected to undue trauma and punishment.” Add as favourites (13) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 123 | Print | E-mail
