European Commission Lanches N2.4 Billion Immunization Project in Kano, Nigeria

The European Commission Delegation to Nigeria is set to implement a project of support to routine immunization in Kano State worth €15.4 million (about N2.4 billion) The project, the EU Support to Routine Immunization in Kano (SRIK), will be launched in Kano State on May 13, 2008.
The goal of SRIK is to reduce child mortality due to prevalent diseases like measles and tuberculosis and as well as eradicate polio from Kano State. The project will last four years (July 2007 – July 2010).
The project is implemented by a team of experts in close collaboration with the Kano State Ministry of Health. The Team will provide the technical assistance to support the Kano State Government and the 44 Local Government Area Councils to improve the delivery of routine immunization services to the people of Kano state.
The Head of Operations of the Delegation of the European Commission to Nigeria, Mr. Denis Thieulin, will represent the Head of Delegation, Ambassador Robert van der Meulen, at the event in Kano. Mr. Thieulin will be accompanied by Dr. Ayeke Anthony, Project Officer for Health.
The EC team will pay a courtesy visit to His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, the Governor of Kano State, at Government House. The visit is organised in collaboration with the National Planning Commission (NPC) and will also have some senior NPC officials in attendance.
Mr. Thieulin said of the SRIK project: "It is our expectation that this project will accelerate the reduction in the number of children with polio until the disease has been eradicated totally. At the same time, the children in Kano will also benefit from increased protection against other vaccine preventable diseases such as measles, tuberculosis and tetanus".
While in the State, the EC team would visit some other European Union Funded Projects in the State such as the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programme (WSSSRP) and the Support to Reforming Institutions Programme (SRIP).
