Lagos to Develop Spelling Bee Competition to a National Programme - Fashola |

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Monday promised to ensure the development of the Spelling Bee competition from a statewide programme to a national programme that could in the near future produce a one day President.
Governor Fashola who spoke when he hosted the board of trustees and governing council of the New Era foundation led by former First Lady, Chief Mrs Oluremi Tinubu added that the programme has been discussed with top federal ministry of education officials on the possibility of replicating it at the national level. He added that it was a thing of joy that the Spelling Bee competition is serving as an avenue for producing young leaders who are demonstrating leadership qualities which have seen a winner have the opportunity of meeting the leader of the United Kingdom. He added that several others are also excelling in their various fields of endeavours with some already in the university pursuing different degree courses. Governor Fashola reiterated that the present administration has adopted the one day Governor innovation which the Spelling Bee competition brings about and would do everything to sustain the programme. Governor Fashola commended the selfless nature of Mrs Tinubu and recalled how she used one of her numerous birthday celebrations to bring attention to the plight of those suffering from the Sickle cell anaemia. He reiterated that the former first lady is someone cares for the weak, the needy and the infirm, adding that she touched the lives of many including his humble self in many positive ways. The Lagos State Governor added that in tandem with the selfless nature of the former first lady, he also used his last birthday to celebrate with the motherless and physically challenged by spending the day with them. He informed that the present administration is preaching a new Lagos of safety and prosperity where all residents can have the peace of mind to conduct their businesses. The Lagos State helmsman promised to respond adequately and directly to the request of the New Era Foundation and directed the Special Adviser on Works and his counter part in the Science and Technology Ministry to visit the campsite of the foundation in Ibeju and report their findings. He said he was not surprised about the support of the New Era brand considering the caliber of people who form the crop of the board of trustees and managers of the prime NGO. Earlier in her address, the President of New Era foundation and former first lady of Lagos State, Chief Mrs Oluremi Tinubu said Lagos is blessed to have the vision, knowledge and visionary leadership which Governor Babatunde Fashola is providing to the people of the State. She added that the achievements of the administration in the first twelve months have been highly rated and that the people are proud of the way he has been confronting the challenges of a complex state like Lagos. Mrs Tinubu sought the assistance of the administration in moving the foundation to its permanent site as the facility presently lacks electricity, water, built roads and kerbs. She added that the completion of the facilities at the New Era camp would also be a significant addition to the stock of educational and social resources available to the population of young people in the state. Among those who accompanied the President of New Era Foundation to Alausa are members of the board of trustees, Sir Molade Okoya Thomas, Chief Solomon Oladunni, Chief Kessington Adebutu and some members of the governing council namely, Mr Femi Adeniyi Williams, Chief Mrs Stella Okolie, Professor Osato Giwa Osagie, Dr Mrs Katia Ekezie and Mrs Grace Giwa.
