Barcelona yesterday surrendered a two goal lead to lose 3-2 at home to Mallorca and leave the Catalans level on 64 points with fourth placed Atletico Madrid who sealed their first ever appearance in the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Deportivo la Coruna.

Barcelona would however be thankful the Spanish league separates teams on same number of points by their head-to-head record and not goal difference as is the case in England and France.

If that were the case, the Catalan side would be in danger of missing out of next season's Champions League altogether after Sevilla moved to within three points of them and Atletico with a 2-0 win at their already safe from relegation city rivals Real Betis.

Sevilla however will not be in Europe's elite club competition next season as they hold a bad head-to-head record against Barcelona and Atletico despite having a much better goals difference compared to both sides.

That leaves the race for the top five positions settled while Atletico could still finish third should Barca fail to win and Atletico win next week.

Meanwhile at the bottom end of the table, the last place for relegation is still undecided with Zaragoza, Osasuna, Real Valladolid and Recreativo Huelva all with a chance of surviving next week after all avoided defeat.

Three points separtes all four with Valladolid in pole position on 44 points after their goalless draw against Getafe, a result that confirmed Ik Uche's club's La Liga status for next season.

Recreativo picked a vital 2-0 away win at Kalu Uche's Almeria while Osasuna defeated relegated Murcia 2-1 to join Recreativo on 43 points, a point ahead of Zaragoza who forced champions Real Madrid to a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Valencia confirmed their top flight status as well with a 5-1 thrashing of their already relegated local rivals Levante, with David Villa scoring a hat trick as he prepares to leave the Mestella at the end of the season.

Valencia’s best performing team at the moment continued their good form with a 2-0 win over Espanyol while Racing Santander could only draw goalless at Bilbao leaving them on 57 points, one ahead of Mallorca in the race for a UEFA Cup spot.
