Nigeria's sole representative in the CAF Champions League Enyimba yesterday in Tunis were defeated 2-1 by Club Africain but still made it to the lucrative group stages of Africa's elite club competition with a 6-3 aggregate win.
The Aba Elephants' sole goal in a tense second leg was scored by Nigeria Premier League's top scorer Eze Otorogwu who also continued his good scoring record so far in this year's competition. The loss on the night, Enyimba's first in the competition after five wins, was however not enough to overturn the 5-1 advantage from teh first leg played in Aba two weeks ago. Club Africain meanwhile will now compete in the CAF Confederations Cup. Enyimba, the African champions of 2003 and 2004, will now await other giants who will be in action this weekend seeking a place in the group stages. Defending Champions League winners, Etoile du Sahel will be out to upturn a 1-0 deficit suffered in the first leg of their third round tie with Zimbabwe's Dynamos. South Africa's Platinum Stars take a 2-1 advantage into their second leg match against Al-Ahly of Egypt while Zamalek have a 3-0 cushion going into their return leg at InterClube of Gabon. In the CAF Confederations Cup, Nigeria's Dolphins confront Ghanaian league leaders Asante Kotoko in Kumasi for a place in the next round of the competition which would see teams from the Champions League join third round winners for the Last 16. Ahead of the crunch encounter, Dolphins have been treated to perceived antics by the Ghanaians in an attempt to unstable the Nigerians who hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Asante is however under immense pressure as the home crowd are expectating their pacesetting club in Ghana to trounce Dolphins of Nigeria's first division especially after overcoming Premier League side Wikki Tourists in the previous round. Dolphins however are an experienced side in the Cup and narrowly missed out on the trophy in 2005, losing in the final that year. The Port-Harcourt based side also have won three of the last four FA Cups in Nigeria, despite not being in the Premier League. Dolphins match with Asante Kotoko will hold on Sunday evening.
