Pa Adesanya's Funeral Rites Commence May 19 Print E-mail

The funeral programme for the late Afenifere leader and foremost politician, Pa Abraham Adesanya will commence on Monday May 19 and end on Friday May 23, 2008.
 
Rising from a meeting with the late elder statesman’s family, representatives from the Southwest States and Afenifere  leaders yesterday, the Chairman of the Burial Committee and Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel said the one week programme was carefully packaged to give a befitting burial to the foremost  Yoruba leader.
 
According to the Governor in a statement signed by his Press Officer, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya “All the I’s have been dotted and all the T’s have been crossed, clearly we have put all necessary arrangement in place, it is going to be a one week affair, it will start on Monday and we will close it on Friday, the committee members will provide details”.
 
Reeling out the programmes  of activities on behalf of the committee, Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye said all arrangements had been harmonized after consultation with various stake holders in the matter”

According to him, the states of the South west had resolved to give Pa Adesanya a state burial.

Programme of events;
 
Monday 19th May, 2008
  1. Afenifere Day, celebration of life of Papa Adesanya to be held at No. 15, Abraham Adesanya St. Apapa at 11.am.
  2. Evening Service of Songs to be conducted by African Church, Broad Street, Lagos at 15 Abraham Adesanya St. Apapa at 5.00 p.m. 
Tuesday 20th May 2008
 
  1. Day of Tribute for Pa Adesanya at the Nigerian Law School Auditorium, Victoria Island Lagos at 11 a.m.
  2. Service of Songs at Papa’s Residence, 15 Abraham Adesanya St. Apapa, Lagos  5 p.m. The service would be conducted by the Divine Holy Order of the 3rd Era  (a religious group which Papa belonged to)
Wednesday 21st May 2008
  1.   Open Air Interdenominational service at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos at 11 a.m.
  2. Service of Songs at Pa Adesanya’s residence, Ijebu Igbo at 5p.m. 
Thursday 22nd May, 2008
  
  1. Joint Parliamentary Valedictory sitting by members of State Assemblies of the States comprising the Old Western States to be held in Ibadan, the capital of the Defunct region at 10 a.m.
  2. Christian Wake keep Service at Ijebu-Ode International Stadium 3.3.0 – 5.30 pm
Friday, 23rd May, 2008
 
  1. Lying in State at St. John African Church, Oke-Agbo, Ijebu-Igbo at 8 a.m.
  2. Open Air Funeral Service at Abusi Edumare Academy, Ijebu-Igbo – 11 a.m. Interment follows immediately at Pa Adesanya’s residence, Oke-Agbo Ijebu-Igbo.
  3. Entertainment of Guests at Molusi College Ijebu-Igbo. 
Meanwhile, the Secretary of Afenifere, Senator Femi Okurounmu said the group had resolved to use Pa Adesanya’s funeral to re-unite all the factions in Yoruba land thereby bringing a lasting unity.
 
According to Okurounmu who spoke alongside Senator Durojaiye during a press briefing on the late politicians funeral programmes “All of you would have noticed from the composition of the burial committee which comprised representatives from all the six states of the South West, the so called factions in Afenifere including the family and the stake holders that we have all resolved to make this funeral an opportunity to re-unite all factions in yorubaland and bring about unity.”
 
“This is the only thing we think we can do to make our late leader happy even in his grave.  As from today by the grace of God, the funeral marks the beginning of a new United Afenifere and Yorubaland”, said Okurounmu.
