Photo: LASG Press The Centre which is one of the many such centres set up across the country after the Nigerian Civil War, will require an estimated N356 million to rehabilitate and upgrade. Fielding questions from Government House Correspondents after a guided inspection of the Centre, Fashola said he was excited by the prospect of the partnership because of the tremendous benefit the State would derive from it. The Governor, who said he undertook the inspection tour of the Centre on the invitation of the Nigerian Army, said his willingness to partner in the project was informed by the fact that the centre would provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youths in the State as well as security for not only the host community but also the whole state. On the specific role the state government would play in the partnership, Fashola said that that would come after he had studied details of the project on consultation with all the stakeholders. “I have seen the centre. It is for me to go back and study the details. There will be consultations with all stakeholders before we come out with our definite role. But it is a worthy venture”, he said. Earlier, while making a presentation of the total outlay of and requirements for the rehabilitation of the Centre, it’s Commandant, Lieutenant Cornel Adeniyi Oshakuade, said the issue of partnership came from the Army High Command which mandated all Divisions to take over the Resettlement Centres under their areas of command and find ways of rehabilitating them through the process of commercialization. According to the Commandant, the centre which was for the resettlement of about 250,000 demobilized soldiers after the war, was abandoned after the demobilization in 1992, adding that as a result of this all the facilities gradually became dilapidated over the years.
Such facilities, the commandant said, include medical centre, vocational training and skill acquisition centre, sporting facilities, piggery, workshop for vehicles, commandant’s quarters and 365 KVA generator including the generator room among other facilities, adding that in addition to rehabilitating these facilities, new ones would be added to accommodate the added role the centre would play. Lt. Col. Oshakuade named the intended new facilities to include swimming pool, standard kitchen and dinning hall, Primary school, vocational training centre, research laboratory centre for, as well as ambulance and food vans, among others. He said the existing but dilapidated sporting facilities would be renovated and upgraded to befit the new status of the centre which, according to him, would take on an estimated 1500 students in the first instant after the rehabilitation exercise. The Commandant disclosed that the Centre would also embark on agriculture including pig and cattle raring as well as fish farming adding that the centre has already taken a proactive action on this by entering into partnership with an Israeli company to set up a fish farm in the State. On the benefit derivable from the partnership by the State, the Commandant said aside from providing food security as a result of its agricultural venture, the centre would provide additional security to the state as well as create job for the people. An inspection of the centre revealed that many of the roofs of many of the building have fallen in while others have blown off completely. Also, the workshop and pig pens, among numerous other facilities, have broken down.
