Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), at the weekend advised the House of Representative to focus on uninterrupted power supply in the country as the ultimate goal of the current investigation of activities in the power sector.
Fashola, who spoke at a dinner for the Organized Private Sector (OPS) and the visiting Speaker and members of the House of Representatives at Ocean View Restaurant, Victoria Island, added that Nigerians are waiting with high expectations for results in the power sector. He urged the Honourable Members not to be distracted but to keep their “eyes on the ball”, noting that the only way the exercise could convey true meaning was for Nigerians to enjoy regular and uninterrupted power supply. “It is a rare opportunity, a rare privilege that may be we can solve our power problems in the time my generation is leading Nigeria”, the Governor said. Emphasizing the critical role Lagos plays in the Nigerian Federation, Fashola said Lagos would lobby the National Assembly in order to get its rightful dues as the economic dynamo of the country as advised by the Speaker.
“That is how it should be”, he said, adding, “but I dare venture to say that the lobbying has already started”. Noting that the way and manner the National Assembly deals with legislation that affects the role of Lagos has become a matter of conscience, the Governor declared, “This is a State where probably every Nigerian calls home, this is a State where every ethnic nationality is represented, and this is the crown jewel in the Nigerian economic Federation”. Reiterating that Lagos is the dynamo of the Nigerian Economy, Fashola asserted that if Lagos works Nigeria would work and urged, “Let us do right by the place we call home so that it will truly become home”. The Governor commended the Speaker and the House for rising up to the challenge as a critical representative House and a watchdog for the executive as propounded in the theory of Separation of Powers, reminding all politicians that immediately the elections are over, governance begins and that services are not dispensed across party lines but for the people being represented. Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Dimeji Bankole explained that the on-going investigations of some sectors by the House was meant to help government achieve the goals of Vision 2020 through the implementation of the Seven-Point Agenda of the Federal Government adding that the inability to ask questions in the past had been partly responsible for the current state of affairs in the country.
According to the Speaker, “The present membership of the House intends that such mistakes are not repeated anymore”. He promised that the House would not overheat the system in its quest to ask questions, adding that this informed the decision to step down the motion to conduct an investigation into the Transport Sector. “We will not create instability in the course of looking for stability”, he said. Bankole said the House, under his leadership, was committed to making a difference in the lives of the average Nigerian and would ensure that the process was followed for every public expenditure.
