Just as winter is showing its face to South Africa, the Sanlam South Africa fashion week (SSAFW), held at the Museum Africa in Newtown Johannesburg on the 14-15 March, was the place to be for an early take on what is really chic for the chilly season from SA’s top designers.
The annual event this year included a leading-edge line-up of established and new South African designers such as Abigail Betz, Amanda Laird Cherry, Jacques van der Watt for Black Coffee, Bongiwe Walaza, Clive Rundle, Colleen Eitzen, Ramatla, Tony Mestre of Mystism, Julian, Karen Ter Morshuizen for Lunar, Terrence Bray, Miss Scalet, Luner, Rubicon, Hermanna Rush and Carlo Gibson of Stranglelove.
These South African designers added colour; soft feminine colours and romanticism, to the otherwise boreing look synomymous with winter fashion. On the ramp, given verve to the collections were white and black models who carried each outfit with grace.
However Nigeria's Bunmi Ademokoya of House of jola models, and Warebi Martha Nigeria's Super Model based in South Africa captivated the audience with their spectacularly elegant look each time they steped on the runway. These two Naija girls opened and closed most of the shows held on the 15th, a feat which is quite remarkble for Bunmi who is a first timer on the international ramp.
The SSAFW Winter Collections which are intended to showcase designers' new collections to key industry opinion leaders, media and select clients, also featured a good number of Nigerian models based in South Africa.
