The Ankara revolution is phenomenal. World over, the humble Ankara and Batik have become the new ‘little black dress’(LBD) that is an essential piece in every woman’s wardrobe. The Ankara which was once regarded as a fabric for the ‘locals’ and the old, has found its way up the fashion ladder and it’s sitting comfortably there.
Pix by Titi Ogundipe In Nigeria today, the ankara and batik have acquired a new status at social gatherings, gone are the days when western outfits dominate the party scene. It is currently designed into various styles from the long gown, short and mini gown, boubou, skirt and blouse, pants and top as well as the buba and iro. And it can be mixed and match with other fabrics; linen, satin, chiffon, damask as well as the jeans, to create exclusive designs and accessoriesd with the blingest of jewelry depending on the wearer’s choice.
The Ankara has become so dynamic, thanks to our designers creative instincts, there is definitely no limits as to how far these designers can go with this indigenous fabric.
