Man and his environment are two inseparable items of discuss and relation. Everything that has to do with the well being and existence of man is encapsulated in his environment. So, the state of the environment becomes a paramount issue to him, if he must reap the natural benefits that are abound within such an environment.
May I crave the indulgence of readers to embark on a journey down memory lane albeit Ahmadu Ali inglorious past. In the late 70s, General Olusegun Obasanjo was the Nigeria Head of State. He succeeded General Murtala Mohammed who was assassinated in a bloody coup led by Col. Bukar Sukar Dimka of the Nigerian Army. Among those appointed into his cabinet was Ahamdu Ali, then a Colonel also in the Nigerian Army. Ali was the minister of education under the Obasanjo regime. In that portfolio, he played a yeoman role for Obasanjo. It does appear that his masterly execution of the hatchet jobs for Obasanjo in that era earned him another appointment as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Obasanjo second coming as the country civilian president.
The campaign for the national chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP by Senator Pius Anyim received a boost in Nasarawa State over the week as the State Assembly has vowed to mobilize delegates from the State for Anyim’s support. The cheering news was broken to Anyim when he went on a campaign tour of Nasarawa State penultimate week.
The now infamous election rally call is no doubt, still resounding throughout the land: “Umaru, are you dead?” “No sir!” Little did anyone know however, that Olusegun Obasanjo’s public reassurance gag in the heat of the presidential campaign a few months ago will bear some significant political hallmarks more than half a year into the Presidency of the former governor of Katsina.
The judgment of the Court of Appeal Abuja on Tuesday the 11th of December 2007 striking down one of the standing vestiges of colonial rule in Nigeria is very refreshing and reassuring in the sense that Nigeria may ultimately be on its path to join the league of civilized societies of the world.
